Wotton Rovers was formed in 1959 by the amalgamation of Wotton-under-Edge A.F.C. and Synwell Rovers. There has been a history of football being played in Wotton for over 100 years. It was a 'Wotton Team' which inflicted one of the first ever defeats upon Bristol Rovers in 1884 - then known as the Black Arabs. In the 1890's Sinwell Star played on the present ground although the slope in those days was even more formidable than today. It was not until the mid 1950's that the pitch was leveled by using the ground for dumping. During that period Synwell Rovers played at the Turnpike Ground at the top of Nind Lane, Wortley. Wotton-under-Edge A.F.C. played for the majority of their time at Symn Lane Playing Field, which has now been developed by the new Blue Coat School. For a number of years they played at the foot of New Road Hill on the Kingswood Road although this was never the best ground in the world due to its very poor drainage.
We joined the Gloucestershire County League in 1983. Promotion was gained to the premier league from the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League, which we won together with the Senior Amateur County Cup to mark a spectacular double success. During our membership of the County League, our best performance came in 1985-1986 when we finished in 5th. position.
In 1999 we were relegated to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League but our exile was fairly short-lived as we re-gained our County League status after three seasons by winning the Northern Senior League again. In the same season we also won the Stroud Charity Cup. On our return to the County League we finished in 3rd spot and again won the Stroud Charity Cup.
